Crazy Sexy Recommendation

So I totally wasn’t going to read another cancer book until alert blog-reader and dear friend Emma recommended Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips to me, adding that one review noted “If Deepak Chopra, What To Expect When You’re Expecting, and Sex and the City had a love child, it would look just like Kris’ Crazy Sexy Cancer Tips.” So really, how could I resist a trip to the library after that?

Kris Carr lives with a very slow moving Stage IV rare vascular cancer. She was diagnosed in 2003 at the age of 31 years old and was told it is incurable. After she freaked out repeatedly she picked up her video camera and documented her journey, making a documentary called Crazy Sexy Cancer. Then she made this book, which is targeted for younger adults who have been diagnosed as a manifesto towards healing and the healing process.

I could not love this book more. Not only is Kris Carr hilarious, but she brings so much advice, knowledge and inspiration to the reader. I loved how she is brutally honest but at the same time funny and charming.  She knows pretty much everything (and more) that a cancer patient deals with on a day to day basis. The tips range from managing your health care, to mental health to beauty, fashion, family, friends eating right, and much more. I also felt a special kinship with her when I saw a picture of her Dana-Farber card in the “Pulling your C-Card” chapter in the book. (Yes, that is a section, and there are many many acceptable times to yank that baby out!)

This book is targeted towards women in their 20’s and 30’s but honestly any woman in this situation could pick it up and benefit. Throughout the pages there are many stories about other women in Kris’s Cancer Posse (as she calls it) that leave you with more hope, laughter and endless information. Thank you Emma for such a great recommendation. It not only boosted my spirits but inspired me, and what’s better than that?

-Kelly  (Whose next book is definitely NOT about the c-word.)
