All Hail the Queen (Latifah, that is.)

I’ve always been a big fan of Queen Latifah, especially her movies. Although a huge celebrity, she has always come across to me in the media as a normal well-adjusted person who does not take her fame for granted. She has taken her career in many different directions and has seen success down each road. When I saw she had written an inspirational book, I knew I had to read it. Put on Your Crown: Life-Changing Moments on the Path to Queendom is aimed at young, female readers with the intention of motivating them to build a strong sense of self-esteem.

This is not a biography but throughout the book Queen Latifah refers to her own experiences through anecdotes about her life, which has hit some pretty rough patches along the way. She gives advice with great intention, allowing us to think she is talking to a friend, not as a motivational speaker. There are eight aspects of life that Latifah highlights: success, beauty, money, love, fear, loss, strength and joy. She empowers the reader by encouraging women to be the best version of themselves in each aspect of their life.

Although written particularly with women in mind, her words are universal and men would also receive motivation from reading this book. I found it to be encouraging but not preachy, and sensible without being overly commonsense. Personally, I feel we need some words of wisdom once in a while and Queen Latifah certainly gave it her best to guide us. This would be a great pick-me-up when you’re down, or a nice gift for a friend or relative.
