I received this book as a gift before I went through cancer surgery a few weeks ago from one of my friends/co-worker. She also wrote some words of wisdom in it for me about how every challenge in her life has made her stronger. The Bounce Back Book by Karen Salmansohn also echoes this sentiment, while giving the reader countless tips on how to choose to be strong as opposed to weak while in the face of adversity.
The author starts off by saying that everyone (at least once) in their life has something happen to them where you are tested in insurmountable ways. It could be death of a loved one, loss of a job, illness, divorce, etc. She calls this event a vortex, and her vortex was a sexual assault by someone she knew. This assault put her in a downward spiral of depression leaving her feeling like she had no way out. The purpose of her book is to give the reader 75 tips to help a person overcome their personal vortex and become a stronger person. These tips were created through her exploration of happiness research, psychological studies, Greek philosophy, various religious beliefs and more.
I really enjoyed this book because I felt like the tips were applicable to most vortex-like situations. Whatever the event was that is causing you pain, you can benefit from this book. I also liked how with each tip she gives a “Bounce Back Assignment” where you can apply the knowledge you were given to help yourself. This isn’t the kind of book where you read it once and put it away. If you want to get the most out of it, bookmark the most helpful spots and go back to read them again when needed. Buy this book for yourself or as a gift for a friend going through a challenging time.
