For those of you who long for romance but are just a little too cynical to actually pull it off, I have the perfect evening for you…make a fabulous dinner, light a fire in the fireplace, snuggle up with your hunny, and take out your copy of When You Are Engulfed in Flames by David Sedaris. Last night was, perhaps, one of the best Saturday nights I’ve had in a while. Not only did I get to live out my romantic fantasy of reading aloud with my partner, but we were able to skip the slightly uncomfortable* mushiness because we were too busy laughing at Sedaris’s satirical humor. These essays are perfect for partner reading because they are both short and engaging. We couldn’t stop after just one…in fact, we eventually left the fire behind to finish two more essays before bed. If you are looking for a character you can really get attached to; a character who happens to have an incredibly sassy personality polished with a grade-A potty mouth, you need to read, “That’s Amore.” If coming out stories complete with awkward vehicular sexual moments are more your thing, check out, “Road Trips.” I’ll keep you posted on the other essays…we are looking forward to another evening with Sedaris very soon!
*Normally, I am all for the mush…it just so happens that both my partner and I live in houses full of housemates…so too much mush can certainly be uncomfortable for all involved. =)
